Use your tablet as a…tablet

Here’s a nice positive post to kick off the year. One of my minor woes recently has been the refusal of my Win 7 PC and my ancient Wacom graphics tablet to hook up. Days were spent fiddling with drivers and serial cable adapters until I finally gave up, thinking that to get those nice Photoshop CC brushes working with a stylus would need hundreds spending on a new Tablet.

Skip a few weeks to when I am playing around with my new toy – a Samsung Note 10.1 – and I see something in the app store. Called Virtual Tablet, the app “receives stylus pen input from tablet devices such as Samsung Slate 7, Galaxy Note, Ativ, and Microsoft Surface and then transfer these input data to the wirelessly connected server devices, for example desktop, and laptop.”

It took a while to get working (finally enabling the ‘Tablet Service” on the PC did the trick), but now I am using my Samsung with pen as a graphics tablet for the PC. It all functions brilliantly, with a smooth and accurate response to the Note stylus. So, in all, very happy, and feel that my birthday treat can now be seen as a solid practical purchase – result! So here’s the first piece created using the tablet & PC set up, a poster for Johnny Sly’s upcoming gig…

Happy New Year 2015…
