3D sculpture

I have been looking at ZBrush for some time now, having tried the demo a while back, but could never quite justify the expense for what would be a pretty niche tool in my animation workflow. I loved its sculpting tools, and the ease in which an organic model could be created from scratch. Every now and then I would wander over to their website to see if they had dropped the price, or were offering a cut down version. Then the other day I randomly Googled "Free 3D sculpting tool" and came across a program called Sculptris.

Turns out I must have not been paying attention, as the vendors of Sculptris are Pixologic - the makers of ZBrush... Its been around for a while and apparently doesn't get much in the way of upgrades or official documentation, but I thought I would check it out, and see what it's like...

Turns out I love Sculptris. About an hour after opening it for the first time, with practically no help file or tutorial to guide my way, I made this (admittedly) weird head. Once you get the hang of the various brushes and camera controls you can just let rip with whatever takes your fancy, with no distraction or fussing with a complicated menu system or interface... just a Wacom pen and a couple of keyboard commands and your imagination. You can also paint directly onto your model (including bump and displacement maps), which is worth having in itself.

If you're looking for a free 3D scultping tool, head over to the download page and try it out for yourself.
